CONTINUING CARE RETIREMENT COMMUNITIES IN VIRGINIA

A CCRC (Continuing Care Retirement Community) offers several levels of senior living care:

  • independent living
  • assisted living
  • skilled nursing

They provide a “continuum of care” in which a retiring senior can “age in place” as they require more intensive services over time. By living within the same community, they avoid leaving friends and caring staff behind as they grow increasingly incapacitated.

Major CCRC developers in Virginia include:

  • Westminster Canterbury
  • Roanoke United Methodist Homes
  • Sunnyside Communities

Westminster Canterbury is a not-for-profit which operates five CCRCs across the state. Its communities offer a full range of amenities, including landscape features like a nature preserve or stocked pond.

Roanoke United Methodist Homes is a not-for-profit with luxury CCRCs throughout eastern Virginia. They feature high-end attributes like solariums, penthouses and luxury views. Finally, Sunnyside Communities operates three CCRCs in western Virginia. These communities feature standard amenities and a variety of home types, from cottages to villas.

Virginia is home to ~32 CCRCs. Richmond and western Virginia have the most properties, with northern Virginia and the Williamsburg area not far behind. Virginia CCRCs usually feature dozens of acres with landscaped garden areas, walking paths, courtyards and wooded areas. Some have waterfront or mountain views. Several feature multi-acre lakes or ponds that have been stocked with fish.

CCRC AMENITIES

Virginia CCRCs offer more amenities than standard active adult communities. These center around full-amenity clubhouses, which usually feature:

  • beauty salons
  • fitness centers
  • casual and fine dining establishments
  • pools
  • great rooms
  • game or art rooms

Other features can include:

  • libraries
  • theaters
  • pubs or taverns
  • chapels
  • community gardens
  • art galleries
  • solariums
  • greenhouses

There are a couple of CCRCs for retired veterans and one for retired Freemasons.

CCRC housing types can vary depending on the preference and needs of the resident. They include:

  • cottages
  • villas
  • garden or patio homes
  • apartments
  • suites or rooms

Common features include big windows and a range of custom accents.

Very few of the CCRCs in Virginia are not-for-profit. It was difficult to obtain monthly rents, but current information suggests they range from ~$1,000 for not-for-profit CCRCs to >$3,000 monthly for all others.
