New Respite Center Opens For People In Psychiatric Crisis
Crisis retreat center offers hope to people with psychiatric disabilities
New York, NY (PRWEB) July 21, 2013
Residents of New York City cheered upon the opening of the Crisis Respite Center, a short-term retreat facility for people struggling with mental health problems. The center will offer 8 beds, standard kitchen and den amenities, and comprehensive case management and counseling services to New Yorkers in crisis.
As a “soft-landing,” community-based alternative to a hospital stay, the Crisis Respite Center provides a friendly, safe, and supportive home-like environment to its visitors. With spacious bedrooms, a beautifully-decorated community room, and a full kitchen, the Center is a welcoming base from which to start or continue recovery. Stays at the center are further supported by a wide range of recovery-oriented services, including 24-hour peer support, self-advocacy education, self-help training, and activities such as yoga, art and poetry, and meditation.
The Center is located in Manhattan and is open to individuals aged 18-65 who are in need of crisis care. Clients must be independently evaluated either by personal providers or clinicians provided by VNS-NY, and must be residents of Manhattan or Staten Island. Those interested can call the Center directly at 646-257-5665, or contact Lifenet at 1-800-LIFENET to start the intake process. The Crisis Respite Center is one of four crisis respite centers located throughout the five boroughs.
The Center is run by Community Access, Inc., in conjunction with Visiting Nurse Service of New York, the Mental Health Association of New York, Services for the Underserved, and other city and state agencies. It is part of Parachute NYC, a new Department of Health and Mental Hygiene initiative. Parachute NYC aims to provide alternatives to traditional emergency-room-based treatment for those in psychiatric crisis.
ABOUT COMMUNITY ACCESS

Community Access provides safe, affordable housing and comprehensive support services, including job training and counseling, and advocates for the rights of people to live without fear or stigma. Virtual Doctors Help Patients Avoid Skyrocketing Emergency Room Charges
With costs of emergency care higher than ever before, virtual doctors present alternative to costly medical health insurance
New York, NY (PRWEB) August 26, 2013
In yesterday’s New York Times, Nina Bernstein took a hard look at the insanely high expenses associated with emergency room visits. She took specific notice of the cost of saline IV solutions, used to replenish lost fluids or administer medication. Although saline IV’s are extremely cheap, at somewhere between $0.44 and a dollar, on patients’ bills the cost is inflated by up to 200 times, with a separate charge of over 1,000 times the cost of an IV for actual IV administration.
On average, emergency room visits cost over 1,000 times more than regular physician office visits. In addition, according to the Centers for Disease Control Hospital Utilization annual reports, visits to urgent care doctors and emergency rooms have doubled over the past 10 years. According to the NHAMCS, only 16% of emergency room visits require acute care. Since proper primary medical care is the best guard against serious medical problems, many visits could be avoided by providing consumers with the opportunity to undergo laboratory testing, ask medical questions of a doctor and/or allow them to correctly diagnose symptoms.
The virtual doctor industry presents an excellent answer to the problem of skyrocketing health care and medical health insurance costs which faces the nation as it heads into a new chapter in its history. It uses phones, websites, e-mail, webcams, and other communications technology to care for patients who are not in the same location as the medical provider. OnlineUSADoctors.com, one of the leaders in this industry, offers comprehensive health care by board-certified M.D.’s, including flexible hours, emergency services, unlimited e-mail access, and exclusive alternative health supplements.
These options are especially important in light of the changes facing the medical health insurance industry. Obamacare, a nickname for the new socialized national health insurance plan which has been passed by Congress, will create a massive demand for medical services without the ability to pay the costs necessary to meet that demand. Fewer medical doctors are graduating from medical school than ever before, creating an even greater shortage of health care professionals. The population of the U.S. will double by 2050, causing an exponential growth in insured consumers seeking services.
Many virtual medicine, or telemedicine, companies provide an essential service by meeting the unique needs of today’s consumer. Modern-day consumers are increasingly pressed by work, family, and financial commitments. These obligations make it difficult to commit to constant doctor’s appointments and medical assessments. Through video or phone consultations, virtual doctors diagnose illnesses and have the freedom to order laboratory tests, prescribe medication, or make a referral to a local physician for follow-up care when necessary.
These services often make a big difference in patients’ ability to maintain their health and avoid emergency room visits. The flexibility of being able to schedule a consultation at the time of the patient’s choosing adds significant value to the patient’s bottom line. Additionally, using virtual doctors will cut the cost of health coverage for each consumer by a minimum of $2,000 per year. For these reasons, virtual medicine provides an excellent solution to the medical health insurance issues of the coming years.

Virtual Doctors Help Men Avoid Rising Medical Health Insurance Deductibles
Virtual doctors offer an answer to new study which finds that men avoid high deductible charges by skipping medical treatment
New York, NY (PRWEB) August 27, 2013
According to Medical News Today, men skimp on badly-needed primary and emergency care as a result of switching to high-deductible medical health insurance plans, usually paid for by an employer. The result of this choice ensures that men accumulate even greater health care costs with time as minor medical problems become major ones. Choosing an insurance plan, for men, can sometimes be a life-changing matter.
A study in the August issue of Medical Care, published by Lippincott Williams and Wilkins of Wolters Kluwer Health, observed 6,000 men over a period of two years who switched medical health insurance plans from a traditional HMO plan to plans with lower premiums but higher annual deductibles. These deductibles usually ranged from US$500 to $2,000.
The study found that in the first year after transition, men made 21% fewer emergency department visits for low- and intermediate-severity health disorders and 34% fewer visits for high-severity health disorders. In addition, they had a 24% reduction in hospitalizations. However, this trend was completely reversed the following year, when hospital admissions for male study subjects increased by 30%. The trends suggest that men may have chosen to cope with increasing deductibles by ignoring or delaying medical care, leading to more serious male health disorders later on.
Such studies support the common-sense idea that increasing medical health insurance costs lead to delayed medical care. However, the implications for men in this case are even more significant. The results of the study suggest that men may have more success in managing their health if they join a medical health insurance plan that offers them the ability to consult with doctors on a regular basis and for a flat fee. Many male health problems, such as heart problems, thyroid problems, inability to maintain erections, and other health disorders, are easily diagnosed and managed with routine primary care.
Virtual doctors offer a highly effective answer to these problems. The virtual doctor industry uses phones, websites, e-mail, webcams and other communications technologies to care for patients who are not in the same location as the medical provider, for a fraction of the cost. Through video or phone consultations, physicians diagnose illnesses and have the freedom to order laboratory tests, prescribe medication, or make a referral to a local physician for follow-up care when necessary.
The virtual medicine industry, or telemedicine, is projected to increase to $27.3 billion in 2016, up from $11.6 billion in 2011. There are a wide variety of virtual medicine firms, such as OnlineUSADoctors.com, one of the leaders in the industry. As one of the only full-service telemedicine alternative platforms available in the U.S., it offers comprehensive health care by board-certified M.D.’s, including flexible hours, emergency services, unlimited e-mail access, and exclusive alternative health supplements for a low flat monthly rate, with a $0.99-per-consult rate for e-mail questions. By using OnlineUSADoctors, consumers can cut the cost of health coverage by a minimum of $2,000 per year.
