SONG REVIEW
"My Donald," Rachel Unthank and the Winterset
Upon hearing the first notes of “My Donald,” by Rachel Unthank and the Winterset, you might think you’re eavesdropping on a pub in Ireland– after everyone’s had 8 pints of beer. But the woozy moan of the harmonica is quickly cut by a voice so pure and true that your spine stiffens. A song about a woman waiting for her husband to return from an Arctic whaling trip, “My Donald” serenades you with wistful sadness which threatens to consume.
The fragile strength of Unthank’s voice stands as a challenge to the cruel wind and bitter cold of the sailor’s life. Her words, “My Donald / He works on the sea / On the waves that blow wild and free / He splices the ropes and sets the sails / As southward he rolls / To the home of the whale,” is paired with the drone of a slight bass, then joined by a harmonizing echo that amplifies the loneliness of the song.
A sad violin caresses the listener with a coarse melody, like a peasant sawing away at an old instrument. This sound is quickly met by the soft strains of a piano, which become increasingly animated as the two instruments duel it out in a hypnotizing solo. “My Donald” haunts the listener with a harsh snapshot of the loneliness of the sailor's life. Its beauty lingers long after the last notes have sounded.
TWEETS
@Dubspot @NicoleMoudaber Playful, tough, hot beats! Nicole's Ibiza set and your Selway vid on Facebook taught me reverb.
@XLR8R @Dubspot Wow, Boards of Canada is back? Way to go, Warp Records. Their new sound has a pulsating energy that gives it a punch.
